Koi Sticker Nail Art

I'd have to say this is a total fail.  I got these koi stickers for nails that looks nice by itself.  However, i just don't know how to apply it over my nails to make it look nice.  Too lazy to create a water/pond background, I just applied it over my pink/nude/brown nails.  Looked very plain and just didn't seem to match at all.

They do look nice on paper, right?  I just don't know how to make it work on my nails though.
