Ngau Chi Wan Village and Choi Hung Estate - Hong Kong

A visit to Ngai Chi Wan Village before it's teared down next year. Checking out the old Hong Kong style dim sum restaurant~

Before actually going to Ngai Chi Wan Village, went to the Choi Hung Estate (Play 10) right next to it.  Lots of people, whether tourists or locals, go here to take a selfie for Instagram.  So, this is what people somewhat think the Choi Hung Estate look like......only on Instagram though...with all the filters.

In reality, it's washout....cannot related how the above and below picture is the same area.

The estate looks like it's from 30 years ago with all the old fashion barbar shop, pharmacy and groceries.  Travelling back in time.

At the time I visit, there was a little gallery showing some of the history of the area.

Next to Choi Hung Estate is Ngau Chi Wan Village (Play 11).  The government is planning to tear this place down in 2025.  The restaurants and shops in the area will not be able to continue operating.

Lots of local grannies and aunties shopping in the market.  The buildings and style of the shops are so old school!

Keep in mind that it's the old Hong Kong style, hygiene is a little questionable.

Decided to have dim sum at 新龍城茶樓 (Eat 3).  A local dim sum restaurant known for handmade fresh dim sum each day.  It's a Hong Kong style kind of friendly restaurant.  Meaning everything is self served with loud staffs that seem mean, but at the same time, they are willing to answer questions.  Just keep things moving fast and no stupid questions.

There is indoor and outdoor seating.  For indoor, the tea service fee per person is $4 compared to $3 outside.  That $1 difference is definitely worth it with the AC.  No one would bring you to a table.  You just walk in, find an empty seat and sit down.  When it's busy, we need to share a table with a stranger.

There is a dim sum cart outside and we just need to line up and grab the dim sum from the staff.  The staff gave us a card, marking down the dim sum we ordered.  Brings me back to my childhood when we used to order dim sum this way instead of having dim sum ordered on our phones nowaday.

Haven't seen one of these slips to mark down our dim sum orders for ages.

Lots of dim sum!

To be honest, the dim sum wasn't amazing.  It's just normal.  No wow factor.  It' the experience that was interesting.  Self serve dim sum restaurant and sharing table with a sweet gray hair couple.
