Day 3: Marinated raw crab that actually doesn't stink at 신진도간장게장 - Hongdae, Seoul

We were looking around to have some raw crab to eat in Hongdae, then realize there is one restaurant specializing raw crab right behind the building that we were staying at!

신진도간장게장 specializes in seafood, namely the infamous raw crab. I personally cannot understand why people can eat raw crab. I have always been taught that seafood should be fully cooked unless they are sashimi and I have seen raw crab as sashimi before my first visit to Seoul. Even though I have been visiting Seoul numerous time, I still couldn't get myself to fully enjoy this delicacy.

신진도간장게장 isn't a fancy restaurant. It just looks like any other traditional looking Korean restaurant in the area with a few ajuma working there. The menu is all in Korea. We had difficulties ordering. Each person is supposed to order 1 serving of raw crab, but the staffs were really nice and allowed us to only order 2 servings (we had 3 people) after knowing I don't eat crab. I was hoping they have other non-seafood food. Turns out there was none. So, I basically watch them eat.

The crabs were filled with roe/egg. Such a beautiful color. I was very surprised that the crab didn't give off any fishy smell.

Eating the roe with rice and seaweed. It was actually good. Sweet and savory.

The set came with soup, egg and rice. So, I was mainly just eating the egg and rice. I tried some of the raw crab meat, it was jelly like and very sweet and savory at the same time. To be honest, it was actually quite good. I just couldn't get myself to fully enjoy it because the idea of eating raw crab meat is still pretty new to me
